Cooling Tower Louvers, You Say?
Their Functionality
Cooling tower louvers serve a very significant process in cooling towers, especially if a tower is placed outdoors. Most of the time, these louvers act as protective barriers, preventing foreign interference such as debris and sunlight from entering the tower, and controlling other elements within the tower. Amongst other things, these elements include the containment of noise and splashing water. The efficiency of air flow within the tower is also vastly improved, preventing the tower from aging by means of scaling, a term used to refer to mineral deposits that can gradually render a cooling tower inefficient.
How To Tell If Louvers Aren’t Functioning Right
Apart from clear physical signs of louvers that may be broken or out of place, there are some other indications of louvers not serving at optimal functionality because of a lack of proper maintenance. These can result in very detrimental effects for your cooling towers.
Scaling
While louvers aren’t meant to keep your cooling towers looking spanking new, they do prolong the aging process of towers, keeping their appearance somewhat ‘clean’. A dirty or cloudy appearance on tower walls is a tell-tale sign of scaling, which can lower your efficiency and increase costs by restricting airflow, increasing the amount of energy required for your cooling tower to function. Scaling will also be visible on the louvers themselves.
Algae Growth
Dysfunctional cooling tower louvers may also let sunlight enter your tower, causing algae to grow and fester within your cooling towers! This will cause chemical imbalances within the water that’s in your cooling tower, causing your tower to reach overexertion whilst trying to fix it, particularly, during cooling tower blowdown.
Water Loss
Water shouldn’t splash out of your cooling towers. This is particularly crucial because it ensures that strained, treated water does not escape, reducing the need for newly pumped water to be treated and cleaned before the water quantity in your towers is met.
